Signs You May Have a Hidden Water Leak
If you can’t see water, how do you know you have a leak? Your home will give you clues. Call us immediately if you notice any of these common warning signs.
A Constantly Spinning Water Meter: If you turn off all water in your home and the small dial on your water meter is still spinning, you have a problem.
A Sudden, Unexplained High Water Bill: This is the #1 sign of a hidden leak. If your habits haven’t changed but your bill has spiked, a problem is the likely culprit.
The Sound of Running Water: Hearing the sound of water running, hissing, or dripping when all faucets, toilets, and water-using appliances are turned off.
Warm or Hot Spots on the Floor: A warm area on your floor can indicate an issue in a hot water line running beneath your slab foundation.
Damp, Spongy, or Discolored Surfaces: Unexplained damp spots, musty smells, or visible mold and mildew on walls, ceilings, or floors.
Low Water Pressure: A sudden and persistent drop in water pressure throughout your home can be caused by a significant issue in your plumbing system.
How We Find Leaks Without Destruction
Forget the old days of random demolition. We use a suite of advanced, non-invasive tools to find leaks with surgical precision.
- Acoustic Listening Devices
Our highly sensitive electronic microphones and listening discs can “hear” the distinct sound frequency of water escaping from a pressurized pipe. Even if the pipe is buried under concrete or behind a wall, our technicians can follow the sound to its source, pinpointing the exact location of the issue. - Thermal Imaging Cameras
For issues in hot water lines, infrared (IR) thermal cameras are invaluable. These cameras allow us to see temperature differences in walls and floors. A hidden hot water issue creates a clear heat signature, visually guiding us to the problem area without needing to remove a single tile or piece of drywall. - Pressure Testing & Line Locating
We can systematically isolate different sections of your plumbing and introduce inert nitrogen gas to pressurize the line. A drop in pressure confirms a problem in that specific section. We then use electronic line locating equipment to trace the exact path and depth of the pipes underground.

Frequently Asked Questions About Leak Detection
Here are answers to some common questions we receive. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to call us anytime! What is a slab leak?
A slab leak is a leak in a water pipe located beneath the concrete slab foundation of your home. These are particularly dangerous because they can go undetected for a long time, potentially eroding the soil beneath your foundation and causing serious structural damage. Our specialized equipment is designed to locate these challenging leaks.
My water bill is high, but I don’t see any water. Can it still be a leak?
Yes, absolutely. Most leaks from your home’s pressurized plumbing system occur out of sight—behind walls, in ceilings, or under the ground. These hidden issues can waste a tremendous amount of water without ever creating a visible puddle inside your home until significant damage has already been done.
How do I perform the water meter test myself?
First, ensure all water is turned off inside and outside your home. Locate your water meter (usually near the curb under a concrete or plastic lid). Look at the meter face; there is typically a small triangle or star-shaped dial known as the low-flow indicator. If that dial is spinning, no matter how slowly, you have a problem.
Does my homeowner’s insurance cover leak detection and repair?
Policies vary greatly. Most insurance policies will cover the “resultant damage” from a hidden issue (e.g., the cost to repair the damaged floor or wall) but may not cover the cost of the plumbing repair itself. It’s always best to call your insurance agent to understand your specific coverage. We can provide all necessary documentation for your claim.
